About J. Michael Williams, DBA
James Michael Williams, DBA, is the Executive Director of Strategy, Innovation & Effectiveness and an Assistant Professor of Business at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's global campus. This campus operates digitally and through over 100 physical locations, including high schools worldwide. Williams earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) from the University of Phoenix, specializing in higher education administration, strategic planning, implementation, and development. His keen interest in Functional Genomics and extensive scientific exploration were fostered during his studies in biology and chemistry at Bethune-Cookman University. Recognizing the gap between researchers' needs and the operational/governmental requirements vital for advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and related disciplines, Dr. Williams shifted his focus from research to supporting researchers.
Throughout his academic journey, Dr. Williams had the privilege of contributing to the Functional Genomics Department at Oak Ridge National Laboratories, facilitated by the National Science Foundation/Department of Energy – Faculty & Student Teams. He also participated in the Howard Hughes Biomedical Research Program at Xavier University of Louisiana and the Florida-Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation at Bethune-Cookman University. In addition, he engaged in research activities with MBRS and MARC at Bethune-Cookman University. His research endeavors primarily centered on functional genomics, specifically studying DNA and protein synthesis of biological agents related to Parkinson’s disease.
Dr. Williams has had an impressive career, transitioning from lab research to an advanced science instructor role within the Volusia County Public Schools System. He taught various subjects, including anatomy, physiology, biology, advanced chemistry, earth and space science, and physical science. He is known for the Program of Advanced Scientific Studies and its summer academy, which fosters interest in STEM subjects for students in grades 8-12. Through his Gifted Hands Initiative, he has served as a career advisor to many high school students who have become professionals in diverse fields like aviation, medicine, research, and business. His exceptional contributions to STEM education have garnered recognition at city, district, and state levels.
Dr. Williams is renowned for his vast experience in project management and team leadership. In 2009, he established the vision and structure for the Enrollment Operations Center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide Campus in Texas, which is now based in South Carolina. He spearheaded this project, successfully re-engaging a significant number of students and achieving an impressive 300% return on the university's initial investment. His leadership also led to the largest external support the university had ever received. To address the complex challenges of higher education enrollment management, Dr. Williams introduced artificial intelligence technologies to enhance decision analytics and foster successful student practices. He has also significantly contributed to the university's efforts to retain Worldwide Campus students. His efforts were recognized by AACRAO and The National Student Clearinghouse, who awarded him for an exceptional AACRAO SEM research presentation in 2019.
As Executive Director of Enrollment Services & Partnerships at Embry-Riddle, Dr. Williams managed the Worldwide Dual Enrollment Program. He developed policies and procedures that made the program sustainable and scalable while planning for potential market changes. Additionally, he established strategic partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations to further the university's goals and mission.
